When it comes to winter skincare , by the time its February my skin definitely needs extra loving and caring. Central heating, winds, the change of temperature can play total havoc with our skin .
The skin on the lips is particularly vulnerable as it doesn’t have any sebaceous glands -the glands that keep your skin moisturized. For me, lip scrubbing is a bit like flossing, I know its important to do but I forget to do it :). So I usually do it at the same time as scrubbing my face. This scrub takes about 5 min to prepare and can be stored in a jar for a few months. It can make an extra special DIY gift.
I generally try to avoid sugar in my diet at all costs, however when it comes to beauty there are many benefits for skin ageing and I love to use it in the scrubs. It leaves my skin super soft and glowing.
Sugar – One of the major benefits of sugar for your skin is that it maintains the oil balance. Sugar contains two important components, glycolic acid and alpha-hydroxy acid. These components help to maintain perfect oil balance in the skin. They will not allow your skin to become too dry or too oily. It also has a natural anti-ageing effect on the skin. Sugar scrubs cleanse your skin and do not allow toxins to attack skin cells. This in the long run slows down the ageing process and helps to keep your skin youthful much beyond your years.
This scrub uses brown sugar , as the sugar crystals in brown sugar are generally smaller than those of white sugar and that makes for an ideal facial scrub.
Raw Honey: is an amazing natural healer, thanks to its antiseptic properties, raw honey is full of antioxidants and enzymes to nourish and hydrate the delicate skin of our lips. I use honey in so many of my skincare products and I cant live without it.
Jojoba oil – The oil that most resembles the oil our skin produces both structurally and chemically, jojoba oil is easily absorbed, seals in moisture and is assimilated by most skin types.
Argan Oil – because I love it so much and because its not only ultra hydrating , but also it balances out skin’s natural oil production and completely transforms your skin, making you look more radiant. Its hydrating properties are also great on wrinkles and help to plump up skin. If you don’t have argan oil , apricot, almond or avocado are also great.
Rose essential oil – apart from smelling divine, it has an array of benefits. Containing a complex array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, rose essential oil has excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin, helps to promote healthy skin cell growth to strengthen and smooth the skin.
You can also use geranium essential oil which promotes skin cell regeneration, improves elasticity and circulation to the surface of skin making it ideal for anti aging treatments or any other oil of your choice.
For this scrub you will need:
30 gr Turbinado sugar
20 gr Muscovado Sugar
2 Tsp Argan Oil
1 Tsp Jojoba Oil
1 Tsp Raw Honey
8 drops Rose or Geranium essential oil
To make, melt the honey for about 30 seconds in a bain marie or a double boiler. Once the honey is melted, add the sugar and oils to it and mix well. Once mixed, spoon the scrub into glass jar.
To use, gently rub a small amount of scrub on face and lips and massage gently in circular motions for a few seconds. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Apply a dab of oil for extra conditioning if needed.
