Activated charcoal has been used for thousands of years and still is widely used today for treating various medical conditions, such as food poisoning, drug overdose and intestinal discomfort. It is also often used in body detox products, such as colon cleansers, as it helps to pull toxins from the body as it passes through the digestive system and therefore energizing and rejuvenating the body system. Personally, I take a few tablets of activated charcoal before a night out, if I am planning to have a few drinks as it will absorb the excess alcohol and therefore will help my body to recover better.
I guess charcoal is not the first thing that springs to mind when thinking beauty, however I am always on the lookout for the natural beauty ingredients , so charcoal seems to stand out. Putting a charcoal on your face sounds scary? Well don’t be, its an amazing ingredient , especially for problematic and acne prone skin. Because of its ability to pull out the toxins from the skin , many skincare companies include charcoal in their products. It also traps chemicals and stops their absorption. However, together with the charcoal ingredient , most of the skincare companies use a mix of other unnecessary chemicals , that do more harm , than good to our skin.I love using natural ingredients when making my own skincare and knowing what is going onto my skin is the main reason why I do it myself.
Here are two amazing beauty recipes that include charcoal , that don’t require many ingredients and are very easy to make .
Refreshing Face mask
Activated charcoal is an amazing ingredient for a face mask. It removes the toxins from the skin and will leave your skin feeling amazingly fresh and clean.
You will need :
1 tea spoon of activated charcoal
1 tea spoon of water or Rose water
1 tea spoon Aloe vera gel or juice
1 pinch of sea salt (optional)
5 drops of Essential oil of your choice ( Tea Tree, Cedarwood and Chamomile are great )
Mix all the ingredients until they are all the same colour and consistency. Apply the mask to your face in thin layer , allow to dry and wash off.
Skin clearing Face Scrub
I love coconut oil and sometimes use it on its own to remove make up and clean my skin. Here is the recipe with added charcoal for an extra detoxifying and cleansing effect. Baking soda also acts as a gentle skin exfoliant and helps to clear pores. I believe that there is not much point in buying expensive face scrubs and it is so easy to make your own. It goes without saying that charcoal is a little bit messy, which makes it even more fun , but don’t be put off as it comes off very easily with a bit of soap.
1/2 cup of Coconut oil (cold pressed, unrefined)
2 pills of activated charcoal
1/2 tsp of baking soda
Bowl with a spoon
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a spoon until it has a consistency of a paste. Spoon the mixture in a jar and seal tightly. Use as a face wash , applying to dry face, giving it a gentle massage , avoiding eye contact and washing off with warm water and muslin cloth. You can use a little bit of facewash to help remove the scrub, if you wish. Give your face a good wipe with a towel afterwards to remove any charcoal left on your face. Some essential oils may also be added to this face wash, such a lavender, sandalwood or geranium.
Its so easy to implement the use of charcoal in your skincare routine and these two recipes are just an example. Its so fun to experiment with it and most importantly feel and see the benefits while doing it.
